Face Acne in adults - feeling out of control

Acne in adults occurs because of multiple different factors:

  • antibiotic/antifungal use that caused gut imbalances

  • food intolerances

  • hormonal changes, especially in women

  • environmental toxins (includes overuse of harsh cosmetics)

  • steroid use

  • elimination issues (includes liver, lungs, and colon)

  • and stress

All of the situations above must be investigated if an adult wants to heal the root cause of acne.

For example: if acne appeared as a result of a heavy course of antibiotics, the reason why antibiotics were prescribed needs to be investigated first.

What stress causes acne?

Feeling out of control is the root emotion of this condition and suppressed fight instinct is the main unconscious coping mechanism. This is causing the adult with acne feel a great deal of anger and resentment that has o way out, but through the skin (anger is boiling under the skin).

Most common scenarios of stress in adults with acne:

  • people controlling you with shame (shaming you so you submit),

  • feeling out of control about how others perceive you (feeling the injustice of their judgments), this also includes old infancy trauma when you mother could've felt repelled/disgusted by your appearance as a newborn baby (yes, you can feel your mom's emotions that early in your life!) that was triggered in adult life (someone made you feel ugly and rejected),

  • unresolved dynamics with parents that still make you feel controlled by them in your adult life (this dynamic first formed in your teenage years),

  • anger and resentment about being harshly misjudged

Questions to ask yourself if you have adult acne:

  1. what in your life is spiraling out of control?

  2. who causes you great deal of shame?

  3. what causes you anger that you cannot express freely?

  4. how attached are you to your appearance? Why?

  5. who would you yell at or punch if there was no consequences for doing so?

  6. why are you seeking acceptance from people who misjudged you so harshly?

  7. how can you express your anger in a safe yet satisfying way?

  8. notice how you feel when you want to pop that zit. Angry?

  9. acne on the back? Who is talking "dirt" behind your back?

  10. acne on the chest? Whose verbal attack makes you feel furious?

Supportive Affirmations:

"I accept myself without reservation. I have a right to feel angry. I am my own authority."
